Meet Sidney: Bioengineer + Scientist

Excited to share this interview with Sidney (@sidney_marcea) with you all! Sidney studied Bioengineering and now works as a scientist.

What do you do for work?

-I’m a Scientist. I do process improvement for vaccine manufacturing.

Why STEM?

-I’ve been interested in Science, engineering, and health care for as long as I can remember. As a little girl I always took my toys apart and put them back together. I’ve always wanted a career where I could create things that improve the quality of life for others. In high school I joined NSBE Jr where I learned about Bioengineering and immediately fell in love.

What is it like being a woman in STEM?

-Being a woman in STEM is absolutely amazing! Women, especially women of color, are underrepresented in STEM. Not only do I love my job, but I also get the opportunity to be a positive and encouraging role model for other women who would like to pursue STEM.

What was your most challenging experience in college?

-My freshman transition was very challenging. I was in an entirely new environment over 500 miles away from home. My college was very rigorous, so I had to work very hard to discover my learning/studying style and keep up academically in my first year.

How do you stay organized?

-I make lots of lists. Whenever I get a new task I add it to my list (in order of priority) so that I increase my efficiency and don’t forget anything.

What do you do for fun on the weekends?

-I spend most weekends discovering the Greater Philadelphia Area through visiting new restaurants and attending events. I also take a self-care day on Sundays.

If you weren’t a scientist, what would you be?

-I would love to be a mechanical engineer

Any interview tips?

-Always walk into the interview with confidence and speak as though the job is already yours.

What advice do you have for women interested in your field?

-I would encourage everyone interested in pursuing my field to get as much laboratory experience as possible while in college. Industry internships are a great addition to your resume as well.
